From Kokoro #028 - Gone

I just love the visual puzzle of this image. With all of these images of the bamboo in the water, the visual challenge is to determine where the water line separates the actual bamboo from its reflection on the surface of the water. After including several of these images in the sequence in Gone, this image pops up. The immediate response most people have is that the water line is at the joint where the highlight meets the shadow. Look again.

The water line is actually at the very bottom of the image. It's a fun visual twist in this image.

If it's not obvious, minimalist compositions are among my favorites. The problem with minimalism is that it can become overly simplistic. Visual puzzles or twists — like the one in this photograph — help make minimalist compositions more compelling.
